The Celebrity as President. He brought mourning to America.
Ronald Wilson Reagan /ˈrɑnəld ˈwɪlsən ˈreɪgən/ (February 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004) was the 40th President of the United States (1981–1989) and the 33rd Governor of California (1967–1975). As president, Reagan implemented sweeping new political and economic initiatives. His supply-side economic policies, dubbed “Reaganomics,” advocated controlling the money supply to reduce inflation, and spurring economic growth by reducing tax rates, government regulation of the economy, and certain types of government spending (primarily services for the poor and middle class). Through his presidency in the 1980s (called “the lost decade” in the United Nations), a new mega crisis we are still unable to fully interpret arose. We still use the language of development, “enriched” by the most reactionary principles unearthed from the cemetery of neo-classic economics. We have enthusiasm for unlimited economic growth and expansion faced with a reality of social and ecological collapse. Our national position is now dangerously incoherent with our historical reality. Reagan escalated the Cold War, authorizing covert CIA “secret wars”, which antagonized Muslims and others, destabilized Central America, and ruined much of America’s international goodwill and credibility. He is famous for saying, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” (referring to the Berlin Wall, which was scheduled for demolition anyway). He is a hero to America’s reactionary rightwing and elitist elements.
